I’ve had the pleasure of visiting this stunning island twice. The first time, my husband and I stayed at The Vine Hotel in the heart of Funchal on a half-board basis. We enjoyed it so much that we promised ourselves a return trip. That opportunity came when we decided to spend Christmas abroad as a family. Madeira offered the ideal mix of warmer weather and Christmas celebrations.

This time, we chose a villa outside Funchal, near the charming fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. The villa was spacious, with beautiful views—a wonderful retreat from the chilly UK winter.

Funchal: A Festive Wonderland

Madeira’s capital, Funchal, truly comes alive during Christmas. Its elaborate lights and decorations, along with the world-famous New Year’s Eve fireworks—once recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest—draw thousands of visitors each year. The festive displays did not disappoint, and nativity scenes and colourful flowers were everywhere.

Câmara de Lobos: A Picturesque Escape

Câmara de Lobos, a famous fishing village, gained international fame when Winston Churchill painted it during his 1950 visit. Known for its vibrant fishing boats and stunning coastal views, it’s also the perfect place to try Madeira’s signature drink, poncha, made with sugar cane rum, honey, and lemon juice.

We enjoyed a scenic walk from our villa to Câmara de Lobos, with plenty of spots along the way to rest and soak in the view.

Christmas in Madeira

For Christmas day, we opted for a relaxing meal in our villa. However, there are plenty of dining options on the island. On Christmas Eve, we found a lovely restaurant offering a tasting menu with matching wines—delicious, reasonably priced, and perfect for the occasion. Funchal itself is full of great restaurants, and many hotels have excellent dining options as well.

Fun Facts About Madeira

  • Madeira’s subtropical climate and volcanic soil create perfect conditions for banana cultivation. Bananas grow abundantly along the southern coast and are harvested year-round.

  • The island is famous for its levada walks, which offer stunning views and connect visitors to Madeira’s natural beauty.

Don’t Miss: On my first visit to Madeira, I indulged in a cocktail on the terrace at Reid’s Palace—a must-visit spot. Their afternoon tea is also exceptional and worth the splurge.

Madeira is a magical destination for a Christmas getaway. From Funchal’s dazzling lights and world-famous fireworks to the charm of Câmara de Lobos and relaxing villa stays, this island offers a perfect mix of festive cheer, natural beauty, and amazing experiences. Whether you're exploring scenic levada walks, enjoying delicious local cuisine, or simply soaking up the winter sun, Madeira is definitely a place you should visit!
